Introduction

  • High Achievers is a project-based course for students who are very good at English and who enjoy studying independently. Each project lasts for one week.

Who is it for?

  • Students who, after testing, are CEF Level C1-C2 (Trinity Grade 8 or above), and who feel comfortable researching and talking on a variety of subjects.
  • Not all Trinity Grade 8 students join a High Achievers class; some may benefit from our regular, more structured classes.

What is it? Special features of the course

  • English Skills classes are replaced with project-based classes on British Culture to challenge learners with new knowledge and more independent study.
  • Projects focus on various aspects of British culture and society, and cover 5 days of classes. Weekly themes include: education and university life, theatre, literature, history and geography, media and pop culture, and royalty. Additional projects could be comedy, cultural and language - including accent - differences across the British Isles.
  • Students use English to further their understanding of key issues and features of life in Britain; language work is also part of every lesson.
  • Students gain cultural experience in off-site Study Visits each week, for example to a Shakespeare play in Oxford, a stately home (Blenheim Palace, birthplace of Winston Churchill).
  • At the end of each week students make a presentation of their work.

Methodology

There are 3 phrases to each week: E I P

E = exposure to the theme (teacher led) [day 1]
I = investigation and deepening of understanding (promoting
    student independence) [days 2-4]
P = presentation of conclusions and thoughts (promoting
speech, development of opinions and communication skills)
    [day 5]

Resources

  • The investigation phase allows students to use the computer suite to access materials and background information. Further, they may be accompanied off campus to experience the theme first hand (i.e. Oxford/ Abingdon museums, theatres and other social venues such as a typical English cafe). Under the guidance of teachers, they may also use video resources to watch and explore DVD and film materials in the classroom.

Presentation

  • This will include video and PowerPoint presentations, debates and magazine based articles to be published in the Radley newsletter, as well as dramatic presentations. Some presentations will be offered on the main stage in front of the rest of the school.

What will students achieve?

  • A greater depth of understanding of British culture.
  • Increased confidence in using the English language.
