Discovery Summer was founded in 2002. The Owner, Jane Merrick, and Manager, Mary Shipley, had previously run summer
programmes as part of Frances King School of English. Between them, and Nigel Heritage, who recently joined as Development Manager, the
Directors have 75 years of experience in running summer schools in the UK. They dedicate their time throughout the year to
developing innovative programmes and preparing for the running of top quality courses for children and teenagers.
Our students come from over 60 countries. Most students come by recommendation, either from family or friends, or from our network
of international representatives, some of whom have been working with Jane for 25 years. Many students return summer after summer.
In 2011, over 50% of our summer staff had worked with us in previous years. This makes for continuity and a great sense of community.
It also fosters an environment where new members of staff can quickly learn 'Best Practice' methods from their more experienced colleagues.
We were the first company to introduce resident English Student Hosts onto our courses and this scheme goes from strength to strength.
Their involvement enables our international students to practise 'colloquial' English throughout their stay - as well as giving them an opportunity
to make friendships that last well beyond the course itself.
Discovery Summer is committed to student welfare and ensuring that a student's experience with us is unforgettable. Students develop confidence, both in their
personal development and in using English in all manner of situations. We believe that living with and studying amongst students from so many
different countries and cultures will prove to be an invaluable experience in the years to come.
